What are pastels made from?

How Are Pastels Made?      If you would like to read about how to make soft pastels, or you are just interested in their contents, click here. (This will open a new window.) It's really interesting.

You Can Even Fix Your Own Broken Pastels.      It sounds quite easy to do. Collect your broken pastel pieces and break them down as much as you can, or grind them. Add a teaspoon or two of distilled water (tap water contains chlorine which will spoil the colours). Then mix into a thick paste and finally roll out into a pastel stick. If it ends up too wet you can blot off some of the excess water. Then leave the stick to dry at room temperature for at least 24 hours.

Unfortunately I don't know the ratio between the pastel and the water. So a bit of trial and error is required.

I'm still collecting my pastel dust in order to try to out this method. Let me know if you've tried to do your own and how you have got along. You can email me through the contact me link at the top of the page.
